Character Analysis of Sarah Penn free essay sample
Analysis of Sarah Penn In Mary E. Wilkinsââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"The Revolt of ââ¬ËMother,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ the character of Sarah Penn serves a special function. She is both representative of the women of her time and also an anomaly. Like other women of the late 1800s, Sarah is a very hard worker in her home. She lives as a servant to the dictates of her husband, and despite her painful disagreement with his actions. She continues to serve him as any other wife would serve her husband. She cooked his favorite meals, sewed his shirts, and did the many chores around the house that are expected of her. However, although representative in these ways, Sarah is also an anomaly, because even while she is serving her husband she finally decides to rebel against him after 40 years of marriage. His long unfulfilled promise of building his family a better house to live in has been postponed once again while he instead builds a new barn for his farmyard animals. We will write a custom essay sample on Character Analysis of Sarah Penn or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Sarah determines to move the family into the barn, which is far nicer than the old house they currently inhabit. As such, her actions constitute a world-changing revolution in a society where wives never challenge their husbandsââ¬â¢ authority or decisions. Sarahââ¬â¢s traits are similarly divided between the traditional traits of her eraââ¬â¢s women and the traits that she needs in order to take a stand against her husbandââ¬â¢s failure to fulfill his promise. On the one hand, Wilkins describes Sarah as having a ââ¬Å"mild and benevolentâ⬠forehead and ââ¬Å"mild, meek and benevolent downward lines about her nose and mouth,â⬠stating that ââ¬Å"she could be any woman of that time periodâ⬠(p. 371). Yet when it comes to the long unfulfilled promise, Sarahââ¬â¢s habitual meekness and subservience give way to self-assertion. Her first words in the story are a question posed to her husband Adoniram: ââ¬Å"What are them men digginââ¬â¢ over there in the field for? â⬠a question that she keeps repeating until she gets an answer (Wilkins, 1890, p. 71). This is a woman who has the gumption to take a stand for what she feels she is honestly entitled to and who is willing to be vocal about it if necessary. When the minister attempts to interfere with what she is doing, Sarah tells him, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got my own mind anââ¬â¢ my own feet, anââ¬â¢ Iââ¬â¢m goinââ¬â¢ to think my own thoughts anââ¬â¢ go my own ways, anââ¬â¢ nobody but the Lord is goinââ¬â¢ to dictate to me unless Iââ¬â¢ve a mind to have him,â⬠yet she follows this immediately with, ââ¬Å"Wonââ¬â¢t you come in anââ¬â¢ set down? (Wilkins, 1890, p. 381). The motivation for Sarahââ¬â¢s sudden rebellion against her husband is derived from two sources. First, the fact of the barnââ¬â¢s being raised is a slap in the face when it is so much newer and better than the house she has been living in for 40 years. Second, Nanny is getting married soon and will not be able to endure the hardships of marriage if she cannot live at home where Sarah can help her. Sarahââ¬â¢s development in the story is of the turning-point variety. She has patiently endured her husbandââ¬â¢s broken promise and being taken for granted for the entire length of her marriage up to her moment of epiphany when she realizes that she must take charge right now if she is ever to have the home she wants. At that moment, she turns and begins asserting herself. She does not become vengeful or bitter; upon finding Adoniram weeping, she touches his arm and comforts him, but she still maintains her victory. References Wilkins, M. E. (1890). Othello Iagos Manipulative Nature Essay Example
Othello: Iagos Manipulative Nature Essay In life, those who may wound us most deeply are not our open rivals, but rather are those in whom we place our trust. William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tragedy Othello utilizes this concept to great extent in the development of its devious villain, Iago. While Iago clearly feels no allegiance to even one other character in the play, he makes each feel as if he is his or her personal confidant and most trustworthy friend and advisor. Additionally, he continually places himself in a dominant role, as one who knows more or is more capable than his peers, and can therefore execute their affairs for them, or at least advise them most aptly on what best to do. In these ways, Iago is able to manipulate the lives of all those around him with ease. The other charactersââ¬â¢ trust of Iago is apparent through both their actions and their words. Othello not only entrusts Iago with his affairs, such as repeatedly relying on him to be a truthful witness (II. iii. 180, 220) but openly proclaims this trust, calling him ââ¬Å"most honestâ⬠(II. ii. 7). Ultimately, it is upon Iagoââ¬â¢s exaggerated reports that Othello, misunderstanding Iagoââ¬â¢s treachery, bases his painfully ironic decision, which he announces to all those in attendance, ââ¬Å"I know, Iago/ Thy honesty and love doth mince this matter,/ Making it light to Cassio. Cassio, I love thee;/ But never more be officer of mine. â⬠(II. iii. 251-254) This statement alone not only shows how Iagoââ¬â¢s ability to endear himself to others directly allows him to influence their decisions, but it also demonstrates his deviousness in such influences. Despite such wrongs that Iago has, in reality, committed against Cassio, his apparent sincerity and friendliness blinds Cassio to his true nature. For instance, it is Iagoââ¬â¢s calculated amiability that convinces Cassio to drink in the first place, prompting a series of disgraces that ultimately ruin him. When Cassio repeatedly refuses to drink, it is Iagoââ¬â¢s friendly, ââ¬Å"But one cup! Iââ¬â¢ll drink/ For youâ⬠(II. iii. 34-35) that allows him to control and still not estrange himself from the useful Cassio. It is this ability of Iagoââ¬â¢s to stay on good terms with Cassio that is proven most useful to him later, as Cassio accepts Iagoââ¬â¢s advice of what best to do in order to restore his good name after his drunken brawl. In advising Cassio, Iago constantly plays himself up as truthful, loving and steadfast. He claims bluntly that all his advice is merely because he is a true friend, saying ââ¬Å"I protest, in the sincerity of love and honest/ kindne ss. â⬠(II. iii. 330) In planting even these small suggestions, Iago makes great headway in his ability to influence Cassio, proven when Cassio later says, regarding Iago, ââ¬Å"I never knew/ A Florentine more kind and honest. â⬠(III. i. 42-43) This statement is especially rich in irony, taking into consideration that it was Iagoââ¬â¢s subtle deception that first landed Cassio in trouble. Friendliness is not the only means, however, by which Iago wins the favor of those around him. Part of what makes him such an appealing character, both to those in the play and to the audience or reader, is his incredibly magnetic personality. He has an impeccably sharp wit and a presentation that, while varying from flirtatious to charming to near clownish, never wavers from this charming spectrum (except for his moments of soliloquy, at which point his true wickedness becomes patent). His charms can be seen as he greets Desdemona with a clever round of couplets upon her arrival in Cyprus. II. i. 134-193) While he is biting in his verse, it is a calculated meanness, intended to delight Desdemona and consequently win her favor. While this scene entertains both those in the scene and in the audience, it also allows Iago to assert himself as the dominant party. This position fulfills his personal desire for power as well as lends his advice to those around him the authoritative pull it would otherwise lack. This dominant nature of Iagoââ¬â¢s becomes most apparent in his scenes with Roderigo. In their conversations, Iago demonstrates most clearly the characteristics that make him an extraordinary villain; not only is he charming and extremely clever, he is also deeply persuasive, able to dominate Roderigo and control his actions while continuing to appear friendly. Iago establishes this dominance over Roderigo not only by elevating his own position in their relationship, but also by subtly belittling Roderigo, such as when he first presents his plan to hurt Michael Cassio. ââ¬Å"If thou beââ¬â¢st valiant (as they say base men being in love have a nobility in their natures more than is native to them), list me. (II. i. 247-249) Such challenges to Roderigoââ¬â¢s character make him bound to prove himself, at which point he becomes easy fodder for Iagoââ¬â¢s manipulations. Roderigo is not the only character whose integrity Iago challenges. When Othello enters to see Montano and Cassio fighting, he chides them, only to be loudly echoed by Iago. Oth. Hold for your liv es! Iago. Hold, hold! Lieutenantââ¬âsirââ¬âMontanoââ¬âgentlemen! Have you forgot all sense of place and duty? Hold! The General speaks to you. Hold, hold, for shame! (II. iii. 166-170) In saying this, Iago succeeds in both ingratiating himself to Othello, a condition necessary in order to gain his trust, and establishing his dominance over the other characters in the scene because of his acting as Othelloââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"right hand man. â⬠In saying these few lines, Iago has highlighted his quickness to act, his sense of duty, and his high morals, and has most likely impressed all those present. While Iago is incredibly careful to always remain friendly when those he needs are present, it is when they leave that his backstabbing nature is revealed. Despite all the camaraderie Iago puts on when speaking with Cassio, in his absence Iago makes no attempts at false allegiance. This is made clear in the scene in which Montano and Iago discuss Cassio behind his back and Iago lies, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Tis evermore the prologue to his sleep. / Heââ¬â¢ll watch the horologue a double set/ If drink rock not his cradle. â⬠(II. iii. 124-126) This lie is made doubly frustrating to hear by the fact that it was Iago himself who coerced Cassio into drinking heavily, something he would not have otherwise done. Every move that Iago makes is utterly calculated, every word a lie to guide others to his own ends. This fact becomes fully apparent only in Iagoââ¬â¢s moments of soliloquy, when no other characters are present to be deceived. It is during these times that Iago speaks his mind freely and lets the audience see that all his civilities are merely stepping stones in his quest to undo Othello. After divulging his plan in soliloquy, Iago states, ââ¬Å"When devils will the blackest sins put on/ They do suggest at first with heavenly shows/ As I do now. â⬠(II. iii. 353-354) This precisely encapsulates the nature of his manipulative powers; Iago suggests with heavenly shows, but is truly a devil just waiting for the right moment.

Different historians views o essays
Different historians views o essays Different historians views on whether Henry VII was modern or medieval. The statement that Henry Tudor created a new monarchy is one that was even debated at the time. Throughout the years historians views have consistently contrasted and changed. The actual new monarchy theory is owed much to the historian J.R.Green and his reference to the events of 1471-1509 in his book Short History of the English People (published in 1876) as the emergence of a new monarchy. J.R. Green suggests this monarchy restored the power and authority to the crown after the events of the war of the roses. He also hinted at the start of tudor despotism an idea supported by several early 20th century historians. Albert Pollard was one of many historians to expand on J.R. Greens theory and move the beginning of the new monarchy to 1485. This is hardly surprising as the date coincides with the beginning of a new dynasty that lasted well over a century and is considered a period of great change and achievement. In particular Pollard emphasised the Tudors creation of the nation state. This way he could make parallels with modernising monarchies in France and Spain. Early 20th century historians historians look highly on the Tudor government as it was se en as creating the basis of the modern nation state. In the last 50 years the concept of Henry VII creating the new monarchy is greatly opposed. The majority of historians argue that no new monarchy existed or that 1485 marked only a dynastic change. J.D. Mackie was the first to challenge in The Earlier Tudors (1952): In England as elsewhere the new monarchy did not emerge fully developed in the year 1485 or in any other year. This factor was not always recognised. Geoffrey Elton preferred to shift the development of the new monarchy to the 1530s and the reforming of Henry VIIIs minister Thomas Cromwell. Elto ...

Hylomorphism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Hylomorphism - Essay Example Form on the other hand is a factor that is derived from the way that we perceive an object. It is what is seen and judged to be the nature of a being. In relation to change, form is subject to change once matter undergoes the process; matter changes form when subject to the elements of change. Understanding how the two principles exist makes it relatively easy to determine the effect that a certain change factor could have on a being (The Editors of Encyclopà ¦dia Britannica). Substance dualism is a philosophical concept classified under the general dualism class (argues that there are essentially two substances that exist; the mental and the physical). Substance dualism postulates that the physical and the mental elements are separate and they exist independent of each other. Taking this view is inherently different from that taken by Hylomorphism, given the nature that change can take place in either of them. Under substance dualism, physical change can take place without affecting the mental and vice versa. On the other hand, Hylomorphism holds that change in matter must affect form and the alternative holds

INTERNATIONAL PEOPLE MANAGEMENT - Essay Example It becomes more complicated when the employees and the company are operating under different sets of culture and tradition. The obvious issue of cultural and institutional differences between the two countries (host and country of origin) creates a question primarily because it dictates the HRM practises and strategies that the MNC subsidiary will utilise, and the support that the host country will provide. Previous studies on HRM practises in the Asia Pacific region have documented that the culture of the origin country has been most influential in their HRM practises. While there are numerous studies outlining the impact of Western Multinationals on emerging economies, there is very little knowledge on the HRM practises among emerging economy MNCs in western economies. Therefore, it was this studyââ¬â¢s purpose to examine the HRM practises of MNCs from emerging economies in western countries. à This study did not provide clearly stated objectives although it can be surmised from the discussion of the significance. This study aimed to (1) identify the HRM practises used by emerging economy MNCs in the UK, and (2) clarify the issue of the effects of cultural and institutional differences in MNC subsidiariesââ¬â¢ choice of HRM strategies and practises. The research questions are stated after the review of the literature and as follows: The review of available literature explored the home and host country influences in the Taiwanese companiesââ¬â¢ UK subsidiaryââ¬â¢s selection of HRM practises through a comparison of Taiwanese and British companiesââ¬â¢ current HRM practises. The HRM practises that were compared were: recruitment and selection; training and development; pay and benefits, performance appraisal system; management promotion and reward; flexible working; organisational communication; and participatory management; and international relations. The most evident difference between the Taiwanese and British

Discussion Week 1 - Assignment Example It implies that, in regards to the earning status of the numerator at the same time as the earnings status in the numerator also when depressing the terms of shareholders equity status in the denominator can be boosted when calculating the return on equity ratio artificially. The cash return on an actual equity is actually the consequential figure (Condon, 1999). The accounts analyst relies on guidance from companies to outline their forecasts which guides to a lower number. The price of missing quarter can go up sharply from an exceptional interplay, among the stocks which are highly priced. Fox (1997) further state that, if you donââ¬â¢t have an extra penny to keep Wall Street happy, as a result your company will be at stake since it will send your stock to reduce, saving the those earnings for next quarter is better than missing a dime or two. This concept is of significance to the companies. As the companies play the earning game they are able to anticipate whether the revenue will fail. Conversely, in case of any prospects that are on a quarter of a particular stated stock, best businesses will ultimately see the mainly equity value approval. Mutually, companies should not much care about the earnings of a given quarter, since profit from the markets behaviors to both earnings drop and hits is what they seek every day. Further, companies in play, when the stock price immensely goes down compared to its basic value, there are chances of going out or private.
